House and Museum of A. N. Ostrovsky

Dom-muzei Ostrovskogo

The museum welcomes its visitors in the exact house where the future playwright Alexander Ostrovsky was born to a family of a lawyer official. Around the mansion you will find a blossoming garden, while the house itself is filled with the atmosphere of serenity and welcoming spirit of the past. The display of the ground floor consists of a dining room, a bedroom, the Red sitting room and the office of Nikolai Ostrovsky, the father of the famous playwright.

The collection of the museum is comprised of author's personal belongings, those of his family and friends actors. The 1840s placards and an issue of 1847 Moscow City Paper with Ostrovsky's first publication is also here on display. The first floor takes the visitors on a trip along the old Moscow, the city that lives only in old paintings and engravings of the time. You will notice an interesting exhibit, a 1840 model of the Maly Theater, which not only recreates the facade but also gives a detailed look inside the concert hall and a part of the stage.

The museum's display also gives an intriguing insight into how Ostrovsky's immortal works of the playwright were put into life on stage showing manuscripts, placards, sketches of decorations and costumes, photos of actors. One of the museum's rooms is entirely dedicated to the stage life of The Storm play. The Maly Theater staged more than 40 works of Ostrovsky during his lifetime. It is interesting to note that often enough Ostrovsky himself lead the rehearsals with the actors trying to get them to deeper understand their characters, make their acting more adapted to the innovative nature of the plays. Today you can see a monument dedicated to him standing in front of the Maly Theater.
