Boat Quay

Boat Quay

Boat Quay is a historical district which deserves to be your starting point to discover Singapore. Can you believe that this beautiful quay served as a busy center of city commerce up to the middle of the last century? According to the historical data, the Raffles Town Plan stated that the district to the south of the Singapore River was intended for the Chinese migrants. So, many citizens of China rushed to Singapore, and quite soon the quay area turned into a huge loading and unloading cargo port. The amount of trade on the southern bank of the river exceeded that on the northern, which was a place where Europeans constructed their estates, offices and administrative buildings. Here, at the Boat Quay the story of Singaporean success as the major center of international commerce started, as the level of business activity along the river was an indicator for the economic situation in the country. Interestingly enough, the river’s southern bend resembles that of a carp’s belly, which in turn is a symbol of prosperity in China. This is the reason why the quay district in time became a beloved place for two- or three-storey homes and shops.

Technical progress has dramatically changed the fate of the quay – the government established a modern cargo services facility a bit upstream, so the area soon was abandoned, getting shabbier and shabbier. Only in the 1990s, as a part of a plan to preserve the Singapore River and its surroundings the quay was given a second birth. Numerous stores, restaurants and bars opened up in its vintage homes.

The quay is one of the best places where locals and expats go after a busy day at work to meet with their friends and discuss the latest buzz over a dinner and a glass of fine wine. The district is full of popular venues. Dallas Restaurant & Bar offers great terrace views over the bay, quality food and great cocktails. Absinthe restaurant will welcome you with fine French delicacies, while Enoteca L'Operetta is a place to taste great pizza and pasta. Meanwhile, if it is a glass of beer after work and a nice chat with your friends you are looking for, stop by BQ Bar that also will provide you with a great dance floor and live football games.
