This is one of the most famous and attracting streets among shopaholics of the world, the 'Asian Milan', a huge entertainment center and one of the most important tourist spots in Singapore. The name of the street literary means "a road to a fruit garden" and refers to the 19th century when this path lead to plantations of fruit trees, nutmegs, and black pepper. Later there were a Chinese and a European cemeteries, tiny stores and the homes of the lower class citizens. By the end of the 19th century the plantations were cut down, and expensive commercial real estate projects were developed all along the street, so gradually no residential bocks were left. In 2009 local authorities invested 40 million Singapore dollars in reconstruction and development of Orchard Road, including green zones were established. Tall tropical trees provide enough shadow from the heating sun, which makes it pleasant to walk along Orchard Road even during the day. This street even offers you an underground walk, as its developed system of underground infrastructure passages interconnects the shopping malls and adjacent streets with each other.

Among the street's most famous malls it is advisable to visit ION Orchard not only to drop in Prada, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Dior, Dolce&Gabbana or Giorgio Armani, but also to see some really unusual designer ideas implemented in the mall's interior. Another shopping destination attracting tourists is a middle-sized Paragon shopping center, which would be a good idea if you need to choose something necessary fast.
