Olympic Village of Poblenou

La Vila Olímpica del Poblenou

Appeared as a result of a massive reconstruction of El Poblenou neighborhood the Olympic Village has turned into a favorite leisure time place not only for tourists, but also for the locals. As in case with other city sites (Port Vell or the beaches) the renovation was carried out as a preparation for the 1992 Olympic games. Apart from apartments for the athletes, which were later sold out as ordinary flats, a harbor named Port Olimpic de Barcelona for 700 yachts was constructed.

Complimentary to the pleasure of gazing at the seaside and beaches on both sides of the harbor there is a chance to take a look at some fine examples of contemporary art. El Parc de les Cascades boulevard features Antoni Llena's David i Goliat statue famous for its gliding face mask. One of the iconic monuments of the modern Barcelona, Frank Gehry's gigantic Fish (Peix) sculpture with its copper shine visible almost from every nearby beach is also situated here. This colossal 35 meter long fish was placed with one of the most fashionable city hotels, Hotel Arts Barcelona. Panoramic windows of this hotel offer a great view over the sea, while the interior is all about calm luxury atmosphere. The place also features an outdoor pool and a magnificent 43rd floor panoramic city view spa center, while as far as cuisine is concerned, Enoteca Mediterranean restaurant (awarded with two Michelin stars) provides some exquisite meals created by well-known Catalan chef Paco Perez. Opposite to the hotel, there is a similar 44-storey office building named Torre Mapfre.

Under the Peix monument you can find some restaurants, shops and a casino. The neighborhood is famous for its vibrant nightlife. After the Olympics a great number of sites opened here. Along the beachside there is one of the most expensive and acclaimed night clubs, Opium Barcelona. The port district is full with little restaurants and spots to enjoy a hookah. Away from the port, at Plaça dels Campions (Champions square) set into the cobblestones of the road are the hand prints and names of the 1992 Olympic games winners and other famous athletes.
