Panorama 1453 Historical Museum

Panorama 1453 Tarih Müzesi

Visiting the museum, you will be able to see the historical place of the most violent battles of 1453, where the fate of Constantinople was decided. About ten thousand soldiers and more than three thousand different objects are depicted on the sphere, which has a diameter of 38 m and height of 20 m. A visitor, standing in the center of the panorama, feels the effect of real presence in the battle, which is enforced by cannon shots, janissary creams during the assault and fall of the rampart, as well as the music of famous Turkish military marches, performed by accompanying musicians. Presence illusion is also emphasized by artistic tricks: the artists managed to realistically depict the warmth of the May sky, covered by cloud-like powder fume and dust on the dome. The picture is supplemented by real objects too, such as scattered weapons, destroyed cannons and cannon balls, ammunition.

Before looking at the panorama itself, you can learn about the history of Constantinople and about the major role of Sultan Mehmed II in the defeat of the great Empire. It is important to notice that most of the exhibition texts are written in Turkish, so it is a good idea to get an audio-guide. Miniature copies of the 1453 Panorama, made in different sizes, always create genuine interest.
