Imperial Wardrobe Collection

Padişhah Elbiseleri Koleksiyonu

Near the eastern wall of the Third Courtyard there is the Dormitory of the Expeditionary Force that houses the magnificent Imperial Wardrobe Collection. The collection displays nearly 2,500 garments, starting from the sultans’ luxurious dressing gowns covered with precious stones and fur to the clothes worn daily. The silk caftan of Sultan Suleiman is decorated with an applique' work of tulip flowers. And the well-preserved red and gold kaftan of Mehmed II the Conqueror is more than five ages old! Childhood kaftan of Sultan Selim is also on display. The excellent condition of all these precious clothes has its explanation – after a sultan died his garments were packed in sacks and sealed up.

Close to the Chamber of Sacred Relics there is a display of clocks, basically consisting of European products of 16th to 20th centuries. One of the most important objects is the unique table clock covered in precious stones that was gifted by the Russian Tsar Nicholas II to Sultan Abdülmecid I.
