Audience Chamber

Arz Odası

The Audience Chamber is located right after the Gate of Felicity. On Sundays and Tuesdays, after the meeting of the Imperial Divan, the sultans held audiences with the viziers on the most important matter of state. The chamber was also the place to receive foreign ambassadors. One of the interesting objects on display here is the throne of Ahmed III, created in the 16th century and decorated with precious stones. Next to the chamber there is a waiting room where the visitors waited for their time to meet the sultan. Numerous gifts brought by the ambassadors were put under the huge barred window to the left of the entrance.

The viziers coming into the chamber to present their reports to the sultan never knew in advance what was awaiting them: the sultan could either express his gratitude and give them some presents or strangle them with the help of his deaf-mute eunuchs. When necessary a fountain in the center of the room was turned on to guarantee complete privacy – this was done when the sultan discussed something that should forever be concealed. However, the legend has it that Roxelana, the favorite wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, managed to eavesdrop on any secret conversation.
