Vakiflar Carpet Museum

Vakıflar Halı Müzesi

Left to the main entrance of the Blue Mosque there is an entrance to Vakiflar Carpet Museum, opened in a former imperial pavilion of the mosque, built during the rule of Sultan Ahmed I (the pavilion was used as a resting area by the Sultan after Sabbatical prayer). Islam culture has always been famous for its carpet weaving art, that is why we highly recommend visiting this unique museum. The public can see ancient knitted pile carpets as well as kilims (pileless carpets or carpet rolls). The 16-19th-century carpets are mostly coming from Anatolian regions of Ushaka, Bergama and Konya. Many carpets exhibited here were taken from mosques where they were used to cover the floors. For better preservation the carpets are protected from sunrays by stained glass.
