Torre dell’Orologio

Torre dell’Orologio

The clock tower decorates the building of the monastery Oratorio dei Filippini. It was erected in the XVII century under the supervision of architect Francesco Borromini. The edifice has the prominent and concave parts at the same time adorned with the picturesque image of Madonna with child Jesus located under the clock dial. Upper part of the tower is decorated with stucco work and topped by the unusual steel structure that combines the weathercock, the bell and the cross. At the corner of the building there is another image of Madonna with the child. Currently the original mechanism from the clock is kept at one of the Roman museums. The tower with the clock is seen from the window of one of the characters of the Roman Holiday (1953) movie.
