Equestrian Monument of Great Elector

Reiterstandbild des Großen Kurfürsten

It is called by many the best sculpture of Berlin. The equestrian statue was paid for by his son King Friedrich I. The monument depicts the Great Elector as a warrior in ancient armour, with the pedestal decorated with patriotic bas-reliefs. During the Second World War the monument was evacuated but when it was on the way to return to Berlin sank on a barge. It was brought back only in 1949. The pedestal was newly constructed for the monument as the old one was left in East Berlin.
