Berlin Wall Memorial

Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer

Berlin Wall Memorial extends along both sides of the Bernauer Strasse which used to be the border between the West and East Berlin. Residents of this street became the unwilling witnesses and dramatic characters of the post-war German history. Fragment of the Berlin Wall, 1,3 kilometre long, was to remain in Berlin as memorial to the victims who died trying to pass the Wall (according to different estimates there were from 130 to 1000 victims). The first part of the Memorial complex was opened in 2010, it is the Window of Remembrance which represents a rusty iron structure with pictures of the victims. The Memorial is planned to be expanded, in the end its total area will comprise around 4 ha.
