Department Store of the West

Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe)

This is a department store in Berlin with over 6 thousand square meters of selling space being one of the largest stores of such kind in Europe. When in 1907 the store opened its doors for the first time, it became the sensation news in the city. The quite street that hosts the department store turned into one of the most visited streets of Berlin at once. KaDeWe was completely destroyed during the Second World War but in 1950 Germans could already return to the store to do shopping. Since then the department store has been called the 'shopaholic heaven' and the 'temple of shopping'. Annually half a million people come here to do shopping or simply visit this tourist attraction. When visitors are too tired of shopping, they go to have a bite to the food hall which is another must for everyone who visits KaDeWe. The food hall made the department store famous all over the world and was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. 400 varieties of bread, 1200 varieties of wurst, 1300 varieties of cheese and 2400 varieties of wine are all sold in KaDeWe! Seventh floor of the store offers an amazing view of Berlin.
