In its history the bridge also carried the names: Nikolaevsky and Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge. It was the first permanent bridge across the Neva River. It connects Vasilyevsky Island with the historical suburbs of the city. Lace railings of the bridge are decorated with the symbols of water world – Neptune's trident and shells. At the time it was opened, the bridge was considered the longest in Europe (around 300 meters).
